I would like to reason about the history lessons that are taught in our schools about African heritage but predominately Ancient African civilizations.
I am currently studying as a profession and would like to eventually teach to all. But while going through the courses, I’ve noticed that when we are taught about Ancient Histories of Civilizations around the world that mainly Greek, Roman, and European history is taught. There’s not even a minimal amount of African civilization that is entered into the course of study. Of course, I know there are special courses for African history but most of it is only geared toward African American studies.
For me this is problem because when I take a look back at what I know about my heritage and ancestors before the Transatlantic Slave, I’ve come to the realization that I know “Nothing”. If it wasn’t for my own research I would be ignorant to the beautiful, magnificent, wonderful accomplishments, religion, and culture of Ancient African Dynasty.
The way that African history is taught is as if we didn’t exist before the slave trade. It seems that because they mention Egyptian culture then that’s it for Africa. As if nothing else surrounded Egypt. During the Ancient civilizations of Greeks and Roman, we were here. There was art, our own religion, government, agriculture, and inventions.
It pains me that this is not being taught. At first, I wasn’t sure what topic in history I wanted to focus on when I receive my doctorate but now after seeing that they only want you to focus on what they want you to know, I have decided to focus all of my efforts to knowing all that there is About our Ancients and apply that to children so that they may know what great civilizations occupied Mama Africa.
I just wanted to express my view on how our school system is selective when it comes to African History. Please feel free to express what you’ve been taught about this subject and what level of African History that you came across.
Blessings
