Please join us in our commitment to help build a new cancer hospital and research and training center in Ethiopia.

Our goal is to also create awareness of the growing and nearly unchecked cancer problem in Ethiopia. Here are some of just a few statistics:

* 80 Million people in Ethiopia
* 1 Doctor for every 40,000 people
* 1 Nurse for every 8,000 people
* 1 Program to deal with cancer
* 1 Cobalt Machine to serve 80 million people
* 150,000 new cancer cases each year, increasing by 5% every year
* Cancer:- Cervical: 33%, Breast: 19%, and head and neck: 17%
* Tikur Anbesa hospital can treat only 500 patients a year
* Cancer kills twice the number of people than HIV AIDS in Africa


"Public awareness of cancer is very low and the diagnosis of cancer is considered a death sentence. The waiting time, particularly for radio therapy is 6 months. As a result, some patients die while waiting for treatment."

My name is Wossene Bowler, I am an Ethiopian American and at this time I reside in Laguna beach California. I am the founder of "The lifessecondchance foundation " established to build a cancer treatment center in Ethiopia and through out Africa. I am dedicated to this cause because I am a survivor of CML Leukemia – celebrating 8 years ! I had to recieve a bone marrow from my brother in 2000. Thank you and GOD bless you Mesfin. I survived because I live in the US and my husband and I can afford the best insurance policy that money can buy. But the patients in Ethiopia are not as fortunate. My life style changed once I visted my home land in 2001. The whole experience changed my view of this world. I made a promise to myself and asked GOD to give me the strength to use this second chance to make a real difference. I strive to help out mainly the children and women living with cancer that have no access to medication, as for the majority of these patients, there is no hope and their fate is death. When I visited one of the larger hospitals in Ethiopia, I Learned that there is at least one year time waiting period just to see a Doctor, another ten month or more on the waiting list to start radio therapy treatment. By then it is already too late to treat the patient. About 70% 0f cancer patients are women, 33% is cervical and 18% is breast, 17% is head and neck, very controllable with the right technology. One of the doctors in Addis Ababa expressed to me that the number of new cancer cases over 200,000 a year. Only 700 patients get treatment a year and the cost is too high for the average family. Most of these doctors believe that this figure is just an estimate , and the number of cancer cases could be much higher than that because the truth is there is no national registry department for caner. Our mission is to equip Tikur Anbesa hospital, located in Addis Ababa, so that people can get immediate access to medication and treatment. Most of these patients don't even know they have cancer until it is too late. We do need to educate people to go get checked immediately if they suspect their health is failing. We are determined to raise awareness, to teach early detection, prevention and diagnose. For instance the leading cause of death for people with HIV/AIDS is cancer. We plan to establish imaging and counseling center as well. We do believe that with the involvement from all of us responsible human beings, we will build State of the arts Hospital. Bono once said "At a certain point, I just felt, you know, God is not looking for alms, God is looking for action. The attention of the world might sometimes be elsewhere, but history is watching. It's taking notes. And it's going to hold us to account, each of us."
