of Heaven and Earth (in
ancient Ethiopic:
Mashafa Mestira samāy
wa meder) is an original
composition of
Ethiopian spirituality
dating back to the 14th
century A. D. Its author
is Yeshaq, a disciple of
’Abbā BahŠayla Mikā’ēl,
the addressee of the
divine revelations
submitted to him by the
Archangel Gabriel.
These revelations,
together with other exegetic and esoteric
interpretations of the Mashāf Qeddus (Holy Book-
Bible), make up the text. The work is therefore
divided in four sections: 1. The secrets of Creation;
2. Apocalyptic interpretation of the Revelation of
St. John; 3. The mystery of the Godhead; 4. Treatise
on counting and symbols of the Scriptures.
The Ethiopic text of the first was edited and
translated by J. Perruchon (Le livre des Mystères du
ciel et de la terre, in collaboration with M. I. Guidi,
PO I, Paris 1907). The same work pertaining the
three remaining treatises was performed by S.
Grèbaut (Le trois derniers traités du Livre des
Mystères du ciel et de la terre, PO VI, Paris 1911).
The extracts we are going to publish consist of two
brief sections of the first Tractate, given here in
direct translation from the Ethiopic text.
Extract I.
In the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy
Spirit, One and Unique God (’Ahadu ’Amlāk)1.
This is the Book of Mysteries of Heaven and Earth,
which narrates the mystery of the first and the last
Tabernacle and which reveals the mystery of whole
creation, how all things were created, each
according to its own species; in regard to this,
’Abbā BahŠayla Mikā’ēl was instructed and he
learned this by Tamhāna Samāy 2. The angel who
was sent to him, Gabr’ēl Berhānāwi (Gabriel the

both the uniqueness of God and His essential Unity. The word comes

following name, Tamhāna Samāy, is uncertain and it is not clear if a
proper name is implied (see: J. Perruchon, page 1, note 2).

everything since its beginning and I expose unto
you everything according to its order of sequence.
Speech concerning the Mystery of Godhead
(Malakot): the Father did not exist before the Son,
and the Son did not exist before the Father, the Holy
Spirit did not exist before the Father and the Son.
They existed before the creation of the world and
ONE (’Ahadu) is their existing after the creation of
the world. Their three names are meant to say One
God (’Egzi’abhēr), equal in their divinity; One is
their existence before heaven and earth. There was
no time at which they did not exist and there was no
beginning to their existence; there is no conclusion
to their existence. They make everything intelligible
and there is nobody who make them intelligible;
they know everything and there is nobody who
knows them; they see everything and there is
nobody who sees them; they have power upon
everything and there is nobody who dominates
them. How will I tell the great benevolence of the
Creator (Fatāri)? And how the creation He created?
For it is not possible to tell how great He is and
which His greatness (is).
Extract II.
Look then how the Trinity manifested Herself at the
beginning of ’Orit (Torah), which says; “In the
beginning”, concerning the Son4, for the Scriptures
call the Son “Qadāmāwi” (First)5; and (the Orit)
says: God (’Egzi’abhēr), concerning the Father; the
earth is Adam, who existed firstly in the mind of
God; concerning the Holy Spirit it tells you clearly:
“The Spirit of God fluttered upon the waters”. And
every deed of the ’Orit and every speech of the
’Orit are established upon the Trinity (Sellāsē). This
word the ’Orit says: “Let Us make man in Our own
image”; look then that through this the Trinity
manifests Herself. It says moreover: “Come, let Us
see what the sons of Eve (the progeny of men) have
made”; look then that the Trinity manifests Herself
through this. Look that the Trinity manifests Herself
from the beginning.

revelation is an angel, as usually Gabriel. This same is the angel who
figures in Ethiopic Henoch 40, 9 and Jubilees 1, 27, as also in the Gospel
of Luke to announce the naissance of both John the Baptist and ’Iyasus
Krestos (Jesus Christ).
4 This interpretation was of Jewish-Christian origin, probably
from Syria, where it was used by the exeget Ariston of Pella (quoted by
Jerome in Quaest. Heb. In Gen., I, 1). The same interpretation of the Son
as “beginning” is found in many Christian writers of the first centuries:
Clement of Alexandria (Eclogae IV, 1; Stromata VI, 7, 58); Theophilus
of Antioch (Ad. Antol. II, 10); Ireneus of Lyon (Adv. Haer. I, 18, 1);
Origen from Alexandria (Homilies on Genesis I, 1). See J. Danièlou, La
