+ Feast of the Holy Apostles +
Saturday, July 12th
This Saturday, July 12th, we celebrate the "Feast of the Apostles." In preparation for this Feast, I would like to share some thoughts concerning the Apostles and the establishment of the early Church. It is my prayer that all will draw closer to Almighty God, to an understanding of the Holy Apostles, and to those who received instruction from Disciples of the Apostles.
"And He appointed Twelve, whom He also named APOSTLES, to be with Him and to be sent out..." (St. Mark 3:14)
The Twelve Apostles formed the inner core of the Lord Jesus Christ's earthly ministry. They were personally chosen by the Lord Himself, had been given the power of working miracles, and were inspired to teach and to do extraordinary mission work. On the Feast of Pentecost the Holy Spirit came down on the Apostles and they became great, giving witness with the power of the life and death and the resurrection of the Lord Jesus as He declared they should.
"When the Bridegroom shall be taken from them.....then they shall fast." (St. Matthew 9:15) The Apostles' Fast is the oldest fast and the first one kept by the early Christian Church. During the Apostles' Fast, the Holy Spirit spoke to them, "As they ministered to the Lord and FASTED the Holy Spirit said separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. And when they fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they sent them away." (Acts 13:2-3)
The Apostles served the Lord Jesus and later provided leadership to the first generation Christian believers. They were of such importance that the word "Apostle" occurs approximately Seventy-Nine times in the New Testament. The Acts of the Apostles describes the Apostles work within the Church in Jerusalem during the first decade.
The writings of the "Apostolic Fathers" are a collection of early Christian writings, written around AD 90 to the last third of the second century. It is a discourse from early Church leaders (Bishops & Priests) over nearly a hundred years. The "Apostolic Fathers" is not a single collection of writings but a selection of writings that relates to practical problems that emerged with the development of individual Church communities in the first and second century. Such problems encompassed the meaning of Christianity, appropriate Christian lifestyle, authority for disputes, and establishing tradition.
The works written within the "Apostolic Fathers" include, but are not limited too:
1) Clement - Letter
2) Polycarp - Letter
3) Letter to Diognetus - In defense of the Christian faith
4) Shepherd of Hermas -
5) The Didache
6) Letter of Barnabas
7) Letters of Ignatius & Polycarp
I would like to share with you one of the most passionate of these works, "Letter of Ignatius to the Romans." With the threat of impending Martyrdom, St Ignatius is being escorted by soldiers from the City of Antioch, were he was Bishop, to the Capital at Rome. St Ignatius role of Bishop led to his arrest. This is considered the Holy of Holies and an excerpt from the letter reads to the Romans' as follows:
"I am writing to all the Churches and am insisting to everyone that I die for God of my own free will--unless you hinder me. I implore you: do not be "unseasonably kind" to me. Let me be food for the wild beasts, through whom I can reach God. I am God's wheat, and I am being ground by the teeth of the wild beasts, that I might prove to be pure bread. Better yet, coax the wild beasts, that they may become my tomb and leave nothing of my body behind, lest I become a burden to someone once I have fallen asleep. Then I will truly be a disciple of Jesus Christ, when the world will no longer see my body. Pray to the Lord on my behalf, that through these instruments I may be a sacrifice to God. I do not give you orders like Peter and Paul; they were apostles, I am a convict; they were free, but I am even now still a slave......."
With thoughts of these great men, God's inspiration in them, and the Twelve who led the way, let us contemplate in awe of the APOSTLES.

The Practice of Praying
Though created in the image of Almighty God, mankind has fallen far. The image is not destroyed, but we have not fulfilled the likeness and we frequently distort the image beyond recognition. Part of the true human life described in the Book of Genesis, are the "walks in the Garden" with God. Man and God converse - talked; they share Communion with one another. We see the restoration of this in the life of the Lord Jesus Christ whose constant life of prayer is frequently referenced in the Sacred Scripture.
Man makes a return to the Garden when he turns to Almighty God in prayer. The essence of all prayer is "Communion with God." Prayer, even intercessory prayer, is always about Communion with God. We do not pray in order to change God's mind. We do not pray in order to get things. We do not pray in order to make things happen. We pray in order to be in Communion with God, Who alone does what He wills, gives what He wills, and governs the universe without advice from anxious men.
As we pray, and the more truly we pray, we unite ourselves to God, and His actions. His will and His gifts become things for which we can give thanks.
I have often read about the "practice of praying." The one problem with this description is that it can be seen as an activity that we ought to do often, when prayer is, in fact, a state of being in which we should dwell constantly. We are not ever truly ourselves when we are not in prayer.
As Communion with God, prayer is itself life-giving. How could we want a life-giving activity to be less than constant? If we are engaging in activities that are not life-giving, then we are exercising Communion with death. There is no neutral ground.
This does not mean that we may not go about our daily chores and responsibilities. But learning to go about them in a state of Communion with God is to learn what it is to live our lives as truly human. We were not created for death, but for life and Communion with God.
There are many ways we maintain such a Communion: use of the Jesus Prayer; the use of frequent or constant thanksgiving; the use of small verses of Sacred Scripture offered up to God throughout our activities. There is nothing we do, apart from sin that cannot be done better in Communion with God. If it is an activity that we cannot ask God's blessing for, then it is an activity that we should avoid. As St. Paul said, "Whatsoever is not of faith is sin."
Most important to me as I think on this topic is the true nature of prayer and Communion with God. Prayer will not be a habit so long as it seems a laborious activity that we carry out because we "ought to." This is the thought of a slave and not a son. Until we come to know Almighty God as our Father we will not be able to pray in such a way that it can become our true life. This is a gift of grace, a kindness from God. If you pray like a slave, then ask for the gift to pray like a son. God is a good God and wishes to free us from slavery and adopt us as His children.
Though the Desert Fathers said, "Prayer is a struggle to a man's dying breath," it is also true that prayer should increasingly be a source of life for us, so that even if we struggle, it is as if a man who has difficulty breathing still struggles to breathe. He doesn't just give up on breathing because it's too much trouble. He will breathe until he can breathe no more. We must pray until we can pray no more.
