Continued* And(once), when the Lord Egziabher felt the desire that a
celebration for Him took place, HE sent unto him three
birds from the garden of Eden, and these spoke unto him
through the language of men, and they kidnapped him
together with them towards the heavenly Iyerusalem,
and here he learned the chant of the 24 priests of heaven.
And when he came back to his own existential state, he
entered the holy church of Aksum at the third hour and
declaimed with high voice, saying: “Alleluya to the
Father, Alleluya to the Son, Alleluya to the Holy Spirit,
before Zion He established the heaven, and after that He
manifested to Moses how to make the workmanship of
the Tent”. And he called this chant Aryam.
And the Negus (King) and the Queen, when they heard
the sound of his voice, they ran together with the
Patriarch and the priests and the notables of the King
and they remained to hear him. And he instituted
chanting according to every season year after year, for
summer and rainy season, for the flowering season and
harvest season, for the days and the Sabbaths, for the
angels and the prophets, for the martyrs and the
righteous ones, with three chants which are: Ge’ez, Ezel
and Araray. And there was not either word of man or
verse of bird and animal which could surpass his three
chantings.
And one day, when Yared was singing being in the face
of the Negus Ghebre Mesqel, while the Negus heard his
voice he planted the rod of his spear in the plant of
Yared’s foot. While abundant blood was pouring out of
it, Yared did not realize it until he completed the chant.
And when the Negus saw, he was shocked and extracted
his own rod from Yared’s foot and said unto him: “Ask
unto me what you desire as a ransom for this blood of
yours which was poured out”. And Yared said unto him:
Swear unto me that you will not deny (it)”. And when
the Negus had sworn unto him, Yared told him: “Release
me so that I can live a monastic life”. Hearing this, the
Negus was extremely sad, together with all his judges.
As he was able, he even revered the oath.
And Yared entered the Church, stayed at the presence of
the Tabot (Ark) of Sion, and then he said: Holy, sacred,
glorified, blessed, honoured and raised”.4 And from there
he went to a monastery of Semyen and there he
remained by fasting and prayer, and particularly
degraded his own flesh. Here he completed his spiritual
fighting. And the Lord Egziabher accorded unto him the
Covenant (Kidan) for anyone who would invoke his
name and perform his commemoration.5 And after this,
he found resting in peace and until today his sepulchre is
not known.6
4 Concerning the symbolism of the Ark and her being image of
Virgin Maryam (Emmebetaccin or our Lady), please refer to the next
article concerning Kebra Nagast.
5 This means that the Lord accorded to Yared the faculty of
intercession after Himself for the sake of those who will plead the Saint.
6 Just as it was for prophet Moses, according to the Book of
Deuteronomy 34, 6.

Qeddus Yared
The Holy Composer
The Ethiopian Orthodox Christian tradition possesses
an unchallenged liturgical heritage, comparable only
to that of the Israelite one, according to the
description found in the Ancient Testament. It is
against this same background that the Ethiopian faith
explains and justifies the crucial importance given to
chanting, dance and musical instruments within the
context of her inspired and Apostolic liturgical
parameters. In the Ancient Testament it is said how
David often entered an ecstatic state brought to him
by a musical experience. Music was therefore worthy
to be considered as a true mediator of the knowledge
of God and as an abode of His spiritual Presence.
Thus, the Psalms of David are a tangible
manifestation of the role that musical inspiration can
play in the path of human beings towards sanctity.
Thanks to her steadfast adherence to Biblical heritage,
which characterizes her as the new and true Israel on
earth, Ethiopia is the only country to have given such
a central role to music in her liturgical tradition. This
allows her to honour the original cultural tendency of
the Apostolic Church, described by St. Paul in his
Epistle to Colossians 3, 16: “Let the word of Christ
dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one
another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms,
hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your
hearts to God” ( see also James 5:13: “Is anyone
happy? Let him sing songs of praise”). Founder of this
tradition –or we could say its reviver- is considered
Qeddus (saint) Yared, born around 519 A..D. in the
holy city of Aksum. He was the author of a large
collection of hymns and songs distributed according
to the different requirements of the liturgical year. In
traditional Ethiopian education taught in religious
schools, the study of holy music plays a great role and
knowledge of such confers upon an individual a high
position in the society. Repositories of this great
heritage are called debtera, custodians of traditional
sciences.
The text published here is the biography of qeddus
Yared as reported by Senkassarios, the Ethiopian book
including the lives of saints. It is directly translated
from ancient Ethiopic following the text published by
A. Dillmann, Chrestomathia Aethiopica, Lipsiae
1866. Due to the explanatory purposes of the present
work, transcriptions of Ethiopic words do not reflect
any scientific standard, but simply aim to reproduce
the actual pronunciation of the mentioned words.

On this day, the 11th in
the month of genbot,
passed away Yared, the
composer on the image
of Seraphins. Yared
belonged to the family
of Abba Gedewon from
the priesthood of
Aksum, which is the
first church that was
built amongst those in
the country of Ethiopia, inside which the faith of Krestos
was refined and that was sanctified in the name of our
Lady Maryam.1
When this Abba Gedewon began to teach the Psalms of
David (K›KéS: ª“ñq) to the blessed Yared, he was
not able to take heed for many days.2 After this, when
(the Abba) beat him and caused him to feel pain, Yared
escaped towards the desert, found shadow under a tree
and saw a worm in the act of climbing the tree, and
coming to the half (of the tree) it fell on the ground.
Many times it acted in this way and with great difficulty
it (finally) climbed the tree. When Yared saw the
diligence of the worm, he repented in his own soul and
came back to his teacher, saying unto him: “Forgive me,
oh Abba, and treat me as you desire”. And his spiritual
teacher admitted him.
When he pleaded to the Lord Egziabher crying, his
heart was opened and he learned in a single day the
books of the Ancient and New Testament, and after this
he was ordained deacon. On that day, there was no end
to the Qenē with high chant, without whispering.3 And
1 The city of Aksum is the place where the Ark of the Covenant
is kept, dating back to the times of prophet Moses.
2 Mezmure Dawit, the Psalms of David, are still today considered
the pillar and foundation of prayer by the Ethiopian Church and her
believers.
3 Qenē is Ethiopian traditional religious poetry, mastered until
today by Debtera and Liqawunt (Doctors or Sages). The reason why the
text specifies that the chanting was “without whispering” it is because it
is believed that before Qeddus Yared there was not a tradition of loud
chanting in Ethiopia.
