for most buldup in locks, you can try an apple cider vinegar rinse:
Hair rinse: Apple cider vinegar gets rid of residue build-up on hair, leaving it soft and shiny. Mix 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar with 1 quart water and use as a final rinse after shampooing.

Also try covering your locs, expecially at night, because lint will get in from pillows, blankets, etc...or try using satin sheets..

Greetings, witch hazel is just an astringent which can be used to clean the scalp but as far as lint it is best to cover the idrens locks @ night. As far as sand a thorough washing should take care of that.

Let me clarify, I suggested the witch hazel, because a lot of times dirt and lint can accumulate to the loc especially when there is too much product trapped in the locs, especially petroleum and bees wax based products, this can cause a waxy build-up in the loc itself, causing other substances to get trapped.. I helped a friend of mine with this issue, you can sptritz some witch hazel and distilled water on the loc and wash with a clariftying shampoo to help reduce the buildup.

Now with lint it can be so easy to pick it up in the locs, especially from the clothes, one sistren had posted, picking it out with a needle i do believe or even a tweezer, but ultimately lint will happen, if its a big issue, covering your locs often, will do a lot to decrease the issue.

Give thanks Sistrens for all your great ideas. The needle was great to pull liny out. We also did the vinegar rinse after washing. Sand is out and so is all lint i think after 7 hours of work (3 youthes) They now all sleep in a stocking cap.....

i agree that the apple cider vinegar does help with cleansing , but lint will definitely happen . I keep my hair covered and I have a serious problem . I heard that keeping it covered so much was the reason for all the lint . I personally think it has some basis and also not properly rinsing out shampoo creating build - up beyond belief. I personally think ones that get their hair treated professionally tend not to have this problem . I think hair texture also has some bearing , softer text's might be more inclined to have trappings of lint. I tried using needles and tweezers , but the end result was lossing some of the loc itself , so I have been just taking more time with my hair and taking real care of it.

I have been toying with the idea of getting dreadlocks of my own, but have wondered about the maintenance of them. This entry has been very helpul to me. Does anyone have some advice they would give to someone who has never had dreads before concerning maintainence?

The maintenance level is really based on a couple of factors such as your hair type (straight, curly, kinky, etc..), how you will be starting your dreads (back combing, comb coils, two strand twists, etc...), and if you'r e going for a free form look as opposed to a very neat look.

Lint is a serious issue for locks as well as build up. DO not sleep with your roots uncovered. Thoroughly rinse hair when washing shampoo residue also causes build up rinse the hair like you would clothes.DO NOT use grease/bees wax at all. Also keep hair covered when dusting, cleaning etc.

How to get rid of them good question I couldn't.
